Rare Mid-Century Studio Pottery Vase – Attributed to Guido Gambone, c.1940s – C.A.S. Vietri, Vietri sul Mare, Italy
This is a particularly striking and rare early studio pottery vase, attributed to the celebrated Italian ceramicist Guido Gambone (1909–1969), created in the 1940s during his time at Ceramiche Artistica Solimene (C.A.S.) in Vietri sul Mare. It’s a piece I selected for its quiet boldness—a small object that carries a strong presence.
The vase reflects many of the defining traits that would later mark Gambone’s mature work: an abstract, high-contrast glaze in chalky white and deep plum-brown, applied to a subtly altered wheel-thrown form. The thick, lava-like surface texture and deliberate glaze crazing give the piece a tactile richness and depth that reveal themselves beautifully in person.
Signed in glaze on the base: C.A.S. Vietri Made in Italy
Materials: Stoneware, glaze
Dimensions: Width: 8 cm | Height: 11.5 cm
In excellent vintage condition with only minor surface wear, consistent with age. There are no chips, cracks, or repairs. The glaze features intentional irregularities—crazing and glaze pops—which are intrinsic to the artist’s expressive technique. The "scarring" to the base has occured during the firing process, where the lava type glaze will have bubbled over the base rim and has been removed one out of the kiln. This does not affect the vase itself and adds to its uniqueness.
A superb example of early Italian modernist ceramics, and a quietly powerful piece for the discerning collector or design-led interior.
